Free Gingival Grafts

These grafts are obtained from the full thickness of gum and connective tissue on the patient’s palate and are used to provide the soft tissue required for both the esthetics and function of implants. Functional requirements include providing sufficient gingiva (gum tissue) to protect the bone-attachment area of implants. Esthetic requirements include the need to allow proper toothform emergence from the gum line (proper curvature or scallop).

Connective Tissue Grafts

These grafts are obtained from beneath the gum tissue of the palate. The advantage they offer over free gingival grafts is that they avoid creating a complete hole (defect) in the palate, which will usually happen with the former method. They are useful for implant coverage, ridge augmentation and site preparation. Dr. Greenberg will determine if connective tissue grafts are an option in each case.
